The annual shareholders meeting of Enfucell appointed Christer Härkönen as a new member of the board. Since 2005, Härkönen has been managing the RFID business of UPM Raflatac, a globally leading RFID manufacturer. Earlier he has worked in various senior management positions at Elcoteq, ICL Personal Systems and Nokia Data.
The board of Enfucell appointed Antti Kivimaa as its new chairman on Aug. 12. Kivimaa has been working as CEO and executive VP at Ruukki Group Plc since 2004. He is also a business angel and has been with Enfucell since 2007 as a shareholder and a board member.
Earlier, Kivimaa has held senior management positions at Sanoma Corporation, worked as CEO at Janton Plc and E. Ahlström, and as senior VP at Sponsor Oy. He has also served as chairman of the board of Esmerk Group Oy and FIM Group Plc, a Finnish banking company.
In addition to Härkönen and Kivimaa, the board of Enfucell includes Dr. Jussi Suomela and prof. Aarne Halme, both founding members of the company, and Harri Ollila, a partner at VNT Management. The company has recently appointed a new CEO, Marko Hanhikorpi, who started on August 12.
”The company is facing challenging times and it must adjust its strategy and operations according to the new market situation. I believe Marko and Christer bring strong and fresh knowledge and complement our team in the areas of application technologies, manufacturing and international business,” says Kivimaa.
With its main focus on printed electronics, Enfucell Oy is a Vantaa, Finland-based technology company with its roots in the Helsinki University of Technology. Enfucell has developed SoftBattery, a thin, flexible 1.5 and 3 volt environmentally friendly power source optimally utilized in disposable and short lifetime products. Potential SoftBattery applications include e.g. RFID (radio frequency identification) micro sensors, functional packaging, and cosmetic and pharmaceutical delivery systems.
Enfucell has received numerous international awards for the development of the SoftBattery, one of the latest by the Guardian who selected Enfucell as one of the hottest private cleantech companies in Europe on the “Cleantech100” list published in September, 2008.
Enfucell was founded in 2002 and employs approximately 20 people, including a presence in the U.S., and it is owned by its founders, private investors, Veraventure Oy, a Finnish governmental venture fund, and Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Co., the largest private sector pension insurance company in Finland. In addition to its owners, Enfucell has been financially supported by Tekes, The Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation.
Enfucell is currently seeking funding of €2 million to €5 million to strengthen its internationalization and battery production development.
