In the near future, all you will need for banking is your new German ID card. This is being demonstrated at CeBIT in Hanover by Bundesdruckerei, together with IT service provider XCOM AG and its own bank, biw AG.
As part of a press conference, the partners presented new applications for the new German ID card. The first step for banking with the new German ID card has now been taken: Users wishing to open a new overnight money account or fixed deposit account with biw AG can do so from the comfort of their own home in a convenient and legally secure manner. All they need is a new German ID card.
The system offers many advantages. The time-consuming PostIdent service required up to now to open an account online is no longer necessary. This saves customers time and gives them faster access to their new accounts. The ID card and the six-digit PIN can also be used to legitimise the holder in online banking.
There are also advantages for the bank.
"The procedure used up to now to open an account online quickly cost the bank €20 or more each time for the bank's own services and third-party services. It must also be assumed that this new single-media process will lead to fewer people failing to complete the account opening procedure than before with conventional legitimisation services," emphasised Michael Heinks, member of the Board of biw AG during the press conference.
The online ID function of the new German ID card enables log-in as well as clear assignment to an account. This means that instead of the current bank card, the new ID card can also be used at cash machines to withdraw money or for other transactions.
"Together with XCOM and biw, we are pleased to promote the potential for efficient business processes in the banking sector and thus offer more convenient and secure online banking for bank customers," Ulrich Hamann, CEO of Bundesdruckerei GmbH, explained during the press conference. "The more possibilities on offer, the more citizens will use the new functions of the new German ID card.”
