With its rural location, varied topography and proximity to the South African border, establishing a reliable security system was both a high priority and a major challenge for Riverside Park, situated in Mbombela, the capital of South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. The crime rate has fallen dramatically since the Zebra solution was installed.
The network, installed by partner ICTS in very challenging RF conditions, connects 36 CCTV cameras across the park and provides Wi-Fi hotspots for visitors.
Riverside Park believes that spending on security can be reduced by as much as 50% due to remote monitoring by the end of the five-year installation period. Previously, 80% of Riverside Park’s surveillance work was carried out by staff and 20% by technology. This figure is now reversed, improving the safety of security teams and allowing them to prioritize incident response.
“Security is the number one concern for Riverside Park’s residents and business owners,” said Renate Scholle, city improvement district manager, Riverside Park. “We now have a real-time feed of data from our CCTV cameras to our control room. Security guards can assess incidents remotely and decide on the most appropriate response, so they aren’t needlessly putting themselves in dangerous situations.”
