Vehicle owners with smart devices in Nigeria will soon have a reliable and secure way to prove their identity using mobile IDs, thanks to a partnership between ASSA ABLOY Group company HID Global and Media Concepts of Lagos.
Using HID goID, HID Global’s new secure identity solution, the mobile IDs will be issued through the Nigerian Police Force’s Biometric Central Motor Registry vehicle registration card program. The program provides real-time access to information about vehicles and their owners through mobile readers powered by ASSA ABLOY’s Seos technology.
The mobile IDs provide citizens and police officers with more convenience, trust, security and real-time access to information. The Nigerian Police will be issued smartphones as mobile readers to verify a vehicle owner’s ID and gain real-time access to reliable accident, crime, or insurance information on the vehicle.
The HID goID platform has been designed so that even in areas of restricted or no network coverage, a police officer can still verify the identity of the owner and vehicle offline. It also ensures privacy protection by enabling users to present credentials with a Bluetooth or NFC connection rather than relinquishing their smartphones.
“This project equips our police officers with the information they need, enabling them to do their job more effectively,” Femi Agoro, director, Media Concept, said.
The program in Nigeria is the first of several that HID Global will announce around the world in support of its newly launched mobility initiative.
“Smartphone adoption is growing exponentially among Nigeria’s 170 million citizens,” said Rob Haslam, VP and managing director of HID Global’s Government ID Solutions. “Offering citizens the option to carry a mobile ID on a smartphone to easily and conveniently prove vehicle ownership is a natural next step in the wider shift to government-issued mobile IDs for vehicle registration and beyond.”
