President Obama announced that the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition (SMLC) will lead the new Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, in partnership with the Department of Energy. The coalition, headquartered in Los Angeles, CA will bring together nearly 200 partners to launch the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, focused on conducting applied research and accelerating the development and adoption of advanced sensors, data analytics, and controls in manufacturing, while reducing the cost of these technologies by half and radically improving the energy efficiency of U.S. advanced manufacturing. The Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute is the ninth manufacturing hub to be awarded by the Administration as part of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI).
This institute brings more than $140 million in public-private investment from leading universities and manufacturers to research and develop new information technologies for use in advanced manufacturing. The Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute will use an open-source digital platform to integrate advanced sensors, controls, platforms, and modeling technologies into commercial smart manufacturing systems. The institute will also provide the manufacturing communities with easy and affordable access to real-time analytic tools, test infrastructure, and industrial applications.
Five regional manufacturing centers will be launched across the US, each focused on local technology needs and workforce development. These regional centers will be home to technology testbeds demonstrating the commercial potential of new smart manufacturing technologies, helping them reach the marketplace faster.
By advancing and proving the potential of these technologies, the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute will enable manufacturers to apply validated tools and technologies to their manufacturing processes, which will improve energy efficiency and productivity across U.S. manufacturing.
