Gemalto announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has denied CPI challenges to validity of several claims of Gemalto’s US Patent No. 5,944,833 widely used in protecting contact and contactless EMV chip card security. Gemalto’s patents describe fundamental measures used in EMV cards around the world to prevent security breaches and card cloning.
Gemalto asserted this patent as well as US Patent No 6,786,418 against CPI Card Group Inc. in lawsuits filed in the US District Court for the District of Colorado. The court put the case on hold while the USPTO completed its analysis. On Nov. 10, the USPTO denied CPI’s challenge to the validity of a number of Gemalto’s patent claims of US Patent No. 5,944,833, which can allow the case to resume.
“I am pleased that the U.S patent office decided in favor of Gemalto after a thorough examination,” said Bertrand Knopf, SVP of Secure Transactions for North America at Gemalto, “Gemalto expects that its competitors respect Gemalto patents.”
Gemalto holds 4,300 patents and patent applications in its intellectual property portfolio representing about 1,200 patent families.
