SCHOTT glass expert Dr. Ulrich Fotheringham (RD) has been named one of 15 new Fellows of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), the first German SCHOTT researcher to achieve that status.
The American Ceramic Society is the leading professional membership organization for ceramic and materials scientists, engineers, researchers, manufacturers, plant personnel, educators, and students.
“That Dr. Fotheringham has been elevated to Fellow of this renowned association stresses his outstanding contribution to glass science and technology,” said SCHOTT research fellow Dr. Roland Langfeld.
Dr. Fotheringham is senior principal scientist in the material development department of SCHOTT. He received his Ph.D. in physics from Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany.
Joining SCHOTT in 1987 as a Ph.D. student, Dr. Fotheringham developed a theory for single-mode communication fibers. He developed the theory of “active thermal conductivity” as well as novel hot forming and annealing processes. His published work includes 20 granted patents and more than 40 journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers.
