PetroChina’s Xinjiang Oilfield to Track Thousands of Oil Pipes with Xerafy’s Solutions

China’s second-largest oil producer aims to improve safety and efficiency with Xerafy’s RFID pipeline tracking solutions.

PetroChina, China’s second largest oil and gas producer, will use Xerafy’s rugged RFID tags to track oil pipe assets at its Xinjiang Oilfield.

The project will start the deployment with 4,000 Xerafy Dot Wedge RFID tags on oil pipelines at Xinjiang and will use up to 100,000 tags per year over the next five years to improve the pipeline asset and lifecycle management, reduce costs and non-productive time in critical processes as well as risks related to pipeline failures.

PetroChina is a subsidiary of the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) headquartered in Beijing. It is China’s second biggest oil producer, and one of the most profitable companies in all of Asia. The oilfield in Xinjiang is the largest one in western China.

With the advanced use of RFID technology, PetroChina can ensure their operations are less likely to be disrupted by delays or an unexpected failure while also improving oilfield safety and compliance. The automated tracking and real-time data also helps PetroChina manage the correct pipe tally and integrity in a drill string and better govern their maintenance and inspection processes.

The Xerafy Dot Wedge tags were developed specifically to withstand the harsh conditions present in oil and gas industry deployments. The UHF tags have a read range up to 1 meter (3.3 ft.) embedded in metal, and are IP68-rated against dirt and fluids.

“RFID provides significant improvements over the traditional paper-based practice, which is time consuming and error-prone,” said Mr. Zhang, GM of Zhongshi Bangli Petroleum Technology Company, the partner company that is deploying the solution.
