The printed electronics (PE) market continues to expand, both in ideas as well as new applications and opportunities. What is particularly interesting is how potential end-users view the possibilities that PE may offer.
From May 31 through June 2, the full potential of PE will be on display at LOPE-C 2010, Large-area, Organic and Printed Electronics Convention, which will be held at the Congress Center Messe Frankfurt, Germany.
Sponsored by the Organic Electronic Association (OE-A), a nearly 140-member working group within VDMA (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau – German Engineering Federation), LOPE-C is expected to draw more than 800 attendees as well as more than 80 exhibitors from Europe, the U.S. and Asia; in terms of exhibition space, conference organizers had to expand the show floor to accommodate increased demand.
Dr. Klaus Hecker, managing director of the OE-A, is very pleased with how the conference is progressing.
“The response is great,” Dr. Hecker said. “There is very good resonance from all over the world for the conference. Bookings are up, and we are expecting more than 800 registered attendees. The exhibition has almost doubled, and we had to expand the exhibition area. We see this as clear sign that LOPE-C is the international marketplace for the community, the place to meet your customers and the community in general.”
Dr. Hecker noted that the high-level program runs the gamut of topics, featuring talks on organic photovoltaics (OPV), OLED lighting, displays/e-Readers, OTFT, electronics, integrated systems, materials, processes and equipment. LOPE-C also features the latest printing equipment, world premieres by several exhibitors, more products and solutions ready for commercialization.
“We see a strong and further growing interest from the print, packaging and converting industry in attending LOPE-C,” Dr. Hecker added.
One of the strengths of LOPE-C is its speakers. The printing industry and publishers are well represented, with Dr. Adrian Weser, head of marketing, research and services for Bauer Media KG, Germany, offering a keynote talk on “The Future of Advertisement – a Magazine Publisher`s Point of View.” Yunfeng Cui, director media solutions, Gruner + Jahr Media Sales, Germany, is offering his insights on “Advertising in and with Print: New Trends” during the business conference.
In addition to Dr. Weser, the June 1 keynote speakers include Dr. Carl-Christian Buhr, European Commission, a member of the Cabinet of vice president Neelie Kroes, Belgium, who will discuss “The European Perspectives in Organic Electronics.” Wolfgang Mildner, OE-A chairman and managing director of PolyIC GmbH & Co. KG, and Dr. David Fyfe, of Cambridge Display Technology (CDT), round out the June 1 keynote speakers.
The June 2 keynote speakers will present their overview on Asian and U.S. activities, beginning with Dr. Seong-Jin Kim, vice president, imaging electronics, Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd.; Prof. Vivek Subramanian, University of California; Woolas Hsieh, Solarmer Energy Inc.’s president; and Stephen Su of ITRI Industrial Technology Research Institute.
The five concurrent tracks on June 1 and 2 also offer plenty of opportunities to hear the latest developments. “The major players are at LOPE-C, presenting their latest results: Konarka, Merck, Plextronics, Sony, Plastic Logic, Dimatix, HP, PolyIC, Coatema, Soligie, Coatema, Novacentrix, Applied Materials, E Ink, Evonik, Solvay, University of Sunchon, pmTUC, Fraunhofer and Holst, to name only a few,” Dr. Hecker added.
LOPE-C has set up a number of interesting programs designed for business executives, which Dr. Hecker believes will add to the attendees’ overall experience. These include the Business Conference and the new Investor Forum.
“The Business Conference gives a compact overview on the commercialization, production and business concepts,” Dr. Hecker said. “It was held very successful already in 2009, and starts this year with a keynote by Harris & Harris, a venture capital (VC) supporter to a number of PE companies. Additional presentations Philips, Fiat, Nokia, Mekoprint, Gruner+Jahr, PolyIC, GSI, TFE and BASF, to name a few, are also planned.”
“This year, we added an Investor Forum to foster match-making of start-ups and companies looking for investors with the investment community,” he added. “This is supported by the European Commission and the European Investment Fund, and is open for companies from all over the world to present to an international audience of investors and VCs. We have applications from Europe, China and the U.S. to present their business case. We also have a new set of pre-conference seminars giving an introduction to devices, processes, materials and a special lecture on OPV.”
In terms of scientific tracks, Dr. Hecker noted that the call for papers resulted in twice as many submission of abstracts this year. As a result, LOPE-C doubled its scientific tracks presentation slots to give more international scientist the chance to present, and also supplemented these talks with a poster session.
The two peer review tracks feature two full days of presentations of talks from leading universities, including Sunchon National University, Technische Universität Chemnitz, University of California – Berkeley; Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, University of Cambridge, University Konkuk, Technische Universität Darmstadt, and Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating.
“The peer review tracks are an additional building block in the conference where latest research results are presented,” Dr. Hecker said. “This complements the business, application and production-oriented presentations in the other conference tracks. An international Scientific committee chaired by Prof. Reinhard Baumann of TU Chemnitz did the evaluation of the papers, guaranteeing high quality.
“These tracks allow young scientists to present their research results to an international audience and make the link between science and industry, and an interactive poster session rounds out the program,” Dr. Hecker added.
Dr. Hecker is seeing increasing interest in PE, and LOPE-C will showcase these new opportunities.
“More and more companies are stepping into the market,” Dr. Hecker noted. “Products like OPV, memory, OLED lighting, sensors and batteries are now available in the market and are integrated into systems. We will see more products and companies ready to deliver. New materials and new equipment are offered to the customers, and they need a place to show and demonstrate.”
“We see a growing interest from many companies in this field,” Dr. Hecker said. “More and more end-users, brand-owners, automotive, logistics, packaging, print, energy and medical/pharma companies are active in organic and printed electronics, and are looking deeper into this new technology as they start projects and develop initial applications. With OPV, OLED lighting, batteries and more PE products entering the market, and e-Readers, sensors and OLED displays already produced on larger scale, this young industry is making significant progress.”
