Display Week, hosted by the Society for Information Display, is the display industry’s most significant show. The best technologies in the industry are featured, and receiving an award is a great achievement.

During Display Week 2022, eMagin Corporation received a People’s Choice Award for “Best New Display Technology.” The Hopewell Junction, NY-based company was honored for its Direct Patterning Display (dPd™) Technology Platform. dPd allows eMagin to design and manufacture high-resolution single stack OLED microdisplays that is capable of more than 10,000 candela per square meter (cd/m2), or nits, of maximum luminance.

This allows eMagin to create OLED microdisplays for AR/VR products with higher levels of brightness, contrast and resolution. The award was voted on by thousands of display industry professionals. eMagin CEO Andrew Sculley said he is honored by the award.

“SID attracts the world’s best display scientists, engineers and users; winning the People’s Choice Award for our technology is as good as it gets,” said Sculley. “It’s a validation of our years of effort in developing a novel technology which we believe will broadly impact the entire display industry. We are happy and grateful for receiving this award.”

It’s been quite a journey for eMagin, one that dates back to its founding in 2000.

“We are the leading manufacturer of active-matrix organic LED (AM-OLED) microdisplays on silicon for the next generation of computing and imaging devices, serving world-class customers in the military, consumer, medical and industrial markets,” Sculley said. “We invent, engineer and manufacture display technologies of the future in the US, including our Direct Patterning Technology (dPd) that will transform the way the world consumes information.”

Sculley reported that eMagin has been working on OLED technologies for more than two decades, with some team members involved in OLED research from the early days of OLED technology.

“The dPd technology research started a few years ago, and with support from the US government as well as NRE funding from tier one consumer electronics companies, we have made a lot of progress and delivered the world’s brightest full color OLED microdisplay of over 10,000 cd/m2, in the recent few months,” he added.

Sculley noted that eMagin's OLED displays appear in a wide range of applications.

“We are currently shipping in mass production, displays for industrial, medical and military applications for AR/VR, helmet-based displays for pilots, thermal scopes used in rifles and binoculars, night vision goggles, etc,” said Sculley. “We are also designing OLED microdisplays for consumer applications.”

There are numerous benefits to eMagin’s dPd technology.

“eMagin’s dPd technology uses Red, Green and Blue emitters that are super bright vs traditional displays that use a white OLED with a RGB color filter that robs 80% of the light; OLEDs made with dPd technology have potential to produce full color microdisplays with brightness of over 28,000 cd/m2 – a level the competition can only reach with monochrome displays,” Sculley observed. “Displays made using dPd technology consumes less power and the color gamut are among the best in the industry. Currently demonstrated single stack dPd displays outperform double or triple stacked competitive approaches.”

eMagin’s dPd technology has improved its’ ability to develop and manufacture OLEDs.

“dPd technology is unique and unconventional,” Sculley observed. “Internally, it’s helping us create new IP, new processes, ability to use new materials etc., all leading to better product for our current and new customers.

“From a customer point of view, our dPd technology helps them overcome the bottlenecks in optical designs that only allow a fraction of the light from the display to reach the eye,” he added. “Our customers are able to design lower power consuming products with amazing color rendition to differentiate their products. A vendor is currently fabricating an advanced, production-capable dPd deposition tool that is expected to improve yield and throughput of this innovative technology for the benefit of AR/VR customers with delivery expected in early 2023.”

Sculley sees great opportunities ahead for eMagin in the coming years, as it works with Tier One companies while also developing even brighter displays.

“eMagin is seeing growth in our current markets – industrial, medical and military – globally and are expecting our technology’s adoption into consumer devices in the future as AR/VR products mature and are used widely,” said Sculley.  “This is because high brightness is required not only for AR, but also for VR applications to eliminate motion artifacts and compensate for low optics efficiency. Additionally, the inherent improvement in efficiency in a high-brightness display allows for longer device lifetime and longer battery life.”
