Liquavista BV announced a collaboration with Freescale Semiconductor the leading provider of eReader application processors.
Liquavista and Freescale will jointly develop platforms for next-generation eReader devices combining the versatility and benefits of Liquavista’s displays with the highly advanced capabilities of Freescale’s i.MX51 processor.
“Working with Freescale will enable our customers to evaluate the benefits of both Liquavista’s displays and Freescale’s processors” said Guy Demuynck, Liquavista’s CEO. “Our development team has already delivered our first SDKs to the market for customers to start developing their own applications on a joint Liquavista-Freescale platform”
”Liquavista’s highly advanced display technology holds great promise for the future of the eReader space,” said Ken Obuszewski, product marketing director for Freescale’s Multimedia Applications Division. “Our collaboration with Liquavista is intended to foster innovation in the vibrant eReader market, and we look forward to seeing the results that this initiative will help enable for our shared customers.”
"This is the next step in the commercialisation of our technology and enables developers to offer enhanced mobile products and applications which deliver to consumers a real mobile lifestyle,” added Demuynck, "This drives our key objective to have the first consumer electronics devices incorporating an electrowetting display on the market by mid-2011 and heralds the next generation of eReader devices."
Freescale’s high-performance i.MX51 system-on-chip provides the necessary file decoding capabilities to match the enhanced graphics and video functionality of Liquavista’s displays. By combining both technologies, eReader manufacturers can produce a wide range of highly compelling consumer products that enable increased usability and enhanced content.
Liquavista’s displays create bright and colorful images that deliver excellent indoor and outdoor viewability and use dramatically less battery power. Offering significant advantages over existing eReader technologies, Liquavista’s high performance displays support color and high-speed video providing a true multimedia experience not currently available with today’s eReaders.
Available for two of Liquavista’s launched product platforms, LiquavistaBright and LiquavistaColor, each SDK includes a 6” electrowetting display, driving circuitry, a mobile application processor host platform and a Linux based operating system.
