With sales of more than $11.5 billion last year, R.R. Donnelley & Sons is the largest printer in the world. This places the company in a strong position to identify trends and pursue opportunities. This includes printed electronics and RFID.
R.R. Donnelley recently announced that is it looking to create three new independent entities, the largest of which will be the Customized Multichannel Communications Management Company (CMCo). In the 12 months from June 30, 2014, CMCo had approximately $7 billion in sales.
CMCo specializes in labels and packaging, as well as direct mail, statements and short-run commercial printing. These are ideal areas for printed electronics and RFID, and R.R. Donnelley’s previous efforts in the field dovetail nicely with this segment.
This is not a new area of interest for the company. Back in August 2010, R.R. Donnelley opened a 120,000 square foot R&D facility in Grand Island, NY, which included a lab for printed electronics. In 2011, R.R. Donnelley took out an equity position in Solicore Inc., a leader in embedded power solutions for smart cards, RFID devices, medical products, and electronic sensors.
Two years later, R.R. Donnelley showcased its printed NFC and RFID tags capabilities for products ranging from labels and packaging to retail displays, magazines and more.
Earlier this year, R.R. Donnelley introduced its line of CustomWave RFID Solutions for smart tags and labels at RFID Journal LIVE! 2015. The company prints its own proprietary RFID antennas onto a variety of substrates, including labels
“RR Donnelley has more than 15 years of experience delivering quality RFID label solutions backed by our extensive label platform and capabilities,” noted Dan Knotts, RR Donnelley’s COO, during the CustomWave launch.
The RFID market is a sizable one, and R.R. Donnelley certainly has the size, customer base and distribution channels to make a major impact on the field.
