Scientist Josep Solà i Càros is the recipient of the Neode Prize 2017. This award is in recognition of the development – together with his team at CSEM – of a new solution for measuring blood pressure continuously and without cuff.
Due to optical sensors integrated in a wearable, and algorithms derived from artificial intelligence, the technology that has been developed promises to revolutionize blood-pressure measurement, which for more than 100 years has been performed using a pneumatic armband.
Cuffless, precise and comfortable, this novel technology will enable an improvement in the quality of life of patients, provide a continuous flow of data, and – in the end – save many lives. According to the World Health Organization, 1400 million people suffer from hypertension. Each year, this illness results in 7.5 million deaths worldwide, the equivalent of the Swiss population.
The Neode Prize is awarded for major innovations in the area of medical technologies.
In line with its mission of transferring technologies, CSEM is now working towards the large-scale deployment of its proprietary and trademarked oBPM (optical Blood Pressure Monitoring) solution.
